To find out when your next MOT test is due, you can either:
- Check the expiry date on your current MOT certificate.
The MOT can be completed at any time before the expiry date, but to preserve your current expiry date, you can take your test up to 1 month (minus a day) before the expiry. For example, if your MOT expires on 27th June, the earliest you can take the test and keep the same renewal date will be 28th May.
An MOT test usually takes 45 minutes to 1 hour to complete. You can relax in our waiting area with free Wi-Fi while we carry out the inspection.
An MOT is an annual inspection required for all vehicles over 3 years old in the UK. The test ensures your car is roadworthy and meets DVSA safety standards, checking items like lights, tyres, brakes, and emissions. Note that an MOT is not the same as a service and doesn’t check the general mechanical condition of the vehicle.
If your vehicle passes, you’ll receive a pass certificate. Minor issues may be noted as advisories, while major issues will result in failure.
Vehicles over 3 years old are required to have an MOT every year. If your car is under 3 years old, it will need its first MOT on the third anniversary of its registration date.
An MOT certificate is valid for 12 months from the expiry date of your previous MOT. Be sure to check the expiry date on your certificate to avoid driving with an expired MOT.
You can take your car for an MOT test up to 28 days before the expiry of your current certificate without losing any days. For example, if your MOT expires on the 20th July, you can have your test between the 22nd June and 20th July and keep the same expiry date.
- During the MOT, we will check essential components such as:
- Lights, tyres, brakes, exhaust, suspension, and emissions
- Windscreen, wipers, and mirrors
- Seatbelts, doors, and bodywork
- Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
- Battery, fuel system, and steering components
Yes, an MOT is required by law to ensure that your vehicle is safe to drive and meets environmental standards. Driving without a valid MOT can result in a fine of up to £1,000 and could affect your car insurance and road tax.
Yes, electric and hybrid vehicles also need an MOT if they are over 3 years old. However, they do not require an emissions test.
Without a current MOT, you are not legally allowed to drive your vehicle. If your MOT has expired or if your car fails, you could face a fine of up to £2,500 and 3 points on your licence for dangerous vehicles.
If your MOT has expired, your car insurance may not be valid, especially if you’re involved in an accident. It’s crucial to keep your MOT up to date to ensure your insurance remains valid.
The only thing you need to bring is your vehicle! If it’s your first MOT, you will need to bring your V5C vehicle registration document.
If your vehicle fails, we will inform you of the repairs needed to pass the re-test. We will also give you a free re-test if the repairs are done within 10 days.
